Death and Society

We can consider death as the most important element which defines the sense of life. A lot of activity in the modern society is dictated by the presence of death, or the fear of death. Our time limit makes us working hard to get our business done as soon as it possible so some resources are left for good retirement. We think that current understanding of death brings a lot of hedonistic behavior to society: consume now - you will not have the opportunity to consume later. We have grown the community of consumers. Just think for a while how many resources are wasted nowadays: non-economical cars, tons of food thrown away, constant change of wardrobe due to the fast changing fashion, thousand of hours of time spent for nothing - like surfing internet, drinking beer or watching movies. And what do you have in the end of your precious life? Joy, which you probably will not remember, work, car, real estate - what else? Probably in your last minutes you will think that you didn't need this entire staff, and you spent your life like a robot, working for something which you really don't need. And may be you can feel that you missed something important, that all your life you were hunting for some miraculous targets and did not fulfill your mission on this earth.

Why does it happening to you and probably billions of people like you, why we are living in the artificial world of money-consuming and what are the real values in our life? To tell the trough we don't know, but we are sure that current matrix of society values is twisted and doesn't respond to the demand of human nature. And, may be, one of the reasons for this is underestimation of such thing as mortality of human being. Or, from the other side, poor public discussion and articulation of mortality fact and development of human spirit before and after death. Our goal is to change society values from consuming to production in the widest meaning of this word. We are going to do this through understanding and identifying the set of real values which are important at the final point of our life journey. This set of values can substantially change accents and goals of our society.

To analyze social aspects of the death, we would like to study death traditions in modern western society and compare them with ones of other cultures and civilizations (including the ancient and non existent). On a first glance it's understandable that death traditions in modern society are not very comfortable for people and far from being perfect. Though general picture of death is described by calm and honorable dying in the circle of close friends and relatives, in fact it's completely different. Most people are dying in hospitals surrounded by aliens and life supporting machines, with brain activity blocked by sedatives and drugs. Let us say that this death style is reflecting our life - life or robots, or if you don't like this word, we can put it as a high tech death.

But do we deserve this kind of death? Probably not. And we think that there are some possibilities to change it through researching and developing different death traditions and approaches, which in turn could change our society values. We are wondering why people pay more attention to birth, marriage, birthdays to do it in a good manner, but isn't it also important to die well?

Western civilizations always was afraid of death, it's almost always was mythical and candid. That's probably why we always forgetting about death and think about our life as endless. And we are forgetting to create the values that will be important during our last minutes as well as forgetting to make our last minutes valuable. We hope that together we can change it and make our life more sensible and rational.
